Ch, Ch, Changes and 100th Day

I was hoping things would have calmed down this past week, but, ummm....no.

100th Day Wednesday, late arrival on Friday (for ice that never showed)

and on top of all that I'm redoing my bedroom!  Oh, and I got a new camera!

First off, here are some things we did for 100th Day!

I just ran out of time, plain and simple...and although I have a freebie for 100th Day that I typically use with my firsties, this year I wanted to do something different.  I tried AND LOVED Mel's (from Seusstastic Classroom Inspirations) freebies found here.  Check out a couple from my class:

 We were on a budget this year, and so I quickly cut out strips and circles and created these headbands, I thought it would take a long time, but it seriously was QUICK and EASY! (and cheap!)

Before anyone comments, I had 4 absent...which puts me at 17!

And now some pics with my new Canon T3i Camera...complete with 50mm lens.

Pictures of my bedroom, still need accent pillows for bed....but I was so proud that I didn't buy the $270 lamps from Pottery Barn that I wanted, but instead found and paired two great buys from Target!

And I also got new CHEVRON chairs for my Mac and my husband's PC workspace...  (from Target)

What About Last Week?

Well, last week was a bit of a chaotic mess, we tested for DIBELS on Wednesday and for Kinder, that pretty much means you have kids in and out all day.  Plus we lad an early release on Thursday, with a late start on Friday because of  snow (see below)

But I promise, we did do some educational things last week...seriously, I promise!

Here are some pictures:

 In our prep for DIBELS, I used 

Kinderglynn's HUGE Winter Success Kit in whole group, small group and with my RTI groups... it was awesome and my kids loved doing it as a class. Check it out here!

We also started using the Scrabble Alphabet Soup Game I found on clearance at Walmart.  My kids were so excited to "scoop" letters, make words, say sounds...I have added it to my Letters and Sounds Station.  

I looked it up, and it is about $19 at Walmart and Target online...not too bad =)

 All the work paid off, my kids did GREAT on the test! 

I was SUPER excited to see all the progress we/they made!

Here is my house with all the snow that kept us home!

Oh, and here are a couple more pics with my very old digital canon rebel, as I am trying to figure out if I want to upgrade to a Canon t2i or a Nikon D7000.

Penguin Week Share and Freebies

It was Penguin Week in my classroom!  

This week we learned as much as we could fit in about penguins and my kids 

LOVED every minute of it!

I focused on the penguins that you can watch live on the webcam at Sea World in San Diego.  

(in my freebie pack, I provide a cheat sheet for telling the penguins apart)

 Here is a model of an emperor penguin 

(bulletin board paper is exactly the right width to create your own...48")

I took pictures of my kids next to it to see whether they were as tall or taller than an emperor penguin!

At the beginning of the week, we had started out by reading books about penguins, brainstorming what we knew and what we learned.  We completed a web and another page by The Teacher Wife (one of my favs) Check out her original post here and get your own freebie pack!

The Mitten Freebies and Links

Today we did a mini-unit on The Mitten by Jan Brett, one of my favorites!  I did some investigating and found some things online to include with the book and made some of my own (all shared below).  

First off, we read the book and I added a copy of it to our reading station along with picture cards to review the story order....  Found Here from Creating and Teaching.

We cut out and decorated our own mittens, but I forgot to take pictures of those!

Here is a freebie I have for writing:

Students worked in pairs to label pages from my Label It The Mitten Pack!

We also used these stamps here (another freebie) to recreate the story order on sentence strips.

Another great idea was found at Swamp Frog First Graders.  My kids loved spinning the spinner and recording the outcomes.  Too much fun!

The kids also got to sort animals into either animals from the book or not from the book, found here by Pre-K Pages.

It was a busy day!  We also started subtraction!  Eek!
