I found this game set of relay eggs and spoons several years ago on clearance at Target. My own kids have used them for fun and we have had relays in my classroom every Spring. But I got the idea the other day while blog stalking to do a relay activity for sight words in my word work station or as whole group.
I created a freebie to go along with it, which you can use with large serving spoons for the Dollar Store and plastic Easter eggs! The directions, recording sheet, and several word lists are included...(but if the lists don't work for your particular group, just use your own word lists or small flash cards!!)

Soooo cute! Could you use this for spelling as well? Have the students spell the word as they are racing? Let me know if you think that would work.
